Patriot Foundry & Castings, a leading American nonferrous foundry that specializes in sand castings of bronze, aluminum and zinc-based alloys, has been awarded its ISO 9001:2008 certification from the International Organization for Standardization.
The certification opens up new possibilities for the 28-year-old foundry. Patriot Foundry already had quality standards in place that met ISO 9001:2008’s requirements, but the certification formalizes everything.
“It opens doors that are currently closed for us,” Chris Leuteritz, Patriot Foundry’s co-owner, said. “There are many manufacturers out there that will not work with you unless you are ISO certified.”
Since taking over the foundry in 2008, Debbi and Chris Leuteritz, wife and husband, have made sweeping changes to the business to improve its operations. They have replaced or repaired nearly every piece of foundry equipment and have created a set of rigid procedures. As a result, product quality and consistency has improved considerably.
ISO 9001:2008 is a document consisting of about 30 pages that sets standards for quality management systems. The certification is essentially the same as ISO 9001:2000, aside from clarifications to existing requirements. The ISO, founded in 1947 and based in Switzerland, is an international body that has members from a number of national standards organizations.
Patriot Foundry’s ISO 9001:2008 Stage 1 audit was performed on Oct. 28, 2011. The company’s certification number is 11-2168. Its DUNS number is 826918117 and its CAGE Code is 54J41.
Patriot Foundry’s leadership also recently pledged to slash its industrial energy intensity by 2020 as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now LEADER program. By taking the pledge, Patriot Foundry is committed to reducing its energy intensity by 25 percent. The program is run by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
